A Glass a Day will keep the Doctor (and Wrinkles) Away


I was watching Dr. Oz the other day and nearly fell off my chair. Believe it or not, the mighty OZ  said that drinking 1 -2 glasses of red wine a day is not only beneficial for your heart, your health, your liver(!), your teeth(!!), and your brain but will ALSO keep the wrinkles away. You heard me right, drinking red wine every day will make your skin look better!!!

Now before you all run out and order your cases of red wine (I already ordered 2 cases, thank you very much), please note that I am NOT advocating alcohol consumption. Excessive alcohol consumption opens up a whole Pandora’s box FULL of nasty bits and problems. Our friends at Web MD warn us that drinking too much alcohol increases your “risk of high blood pressure, high triglycerides, liver damage, obesity, certain types of cancer, accidents” and a whole host of other problems.

Having said that, MODERATE consumption (1-2 glasses a day) MAX is what the doctor ordered.

But how can this “jesus juice” be such a cure-all?

Well it is primarily because wine is made from grapes and grapes, specifically grape skins, contain resveratrol. Since red wine is fermented with grape skins longer than other beverages, red wine has high amounts of resveratrol.

Resveratrol contains high amounts of anti-oxidents called polyphenols. These polyphenols can be broken down into 2 groups – flavonoids and non-flavonoids. These properties have been proven to be excellent antioxidants, anti coagulants, anti inflamatories and have anti cancer effects.

Regarding your skin, antioxidants stop damaging free radicals from attacking which will result in better and clearer skin.

In an article from Medical News Today about the benefits of red wine, Professor Lindsey Brown, of the school of Biomedical Studies at the University of Queensland says of red wine  that “the breadth of benefits is remarkable – cancer prevention, protection of the heart and brain from damage, reducing age related disease such as inflammation, reversing diabetes and obesity and many more.”

You don’t have to take my word for it. There is a TON of research out there supporting these claims.
